Introduction of the Museum of Shanghai Normal University


The Museum of Shanghai Normal University is a comprehensive college museum which collects and exhibits the collections of history and art. Its predecessor is the Heritage Galleries of History Department of Shanghai Normal University. The Museum of Shanghai Normal University possesses over ten different kinds of collections such as ancient Chinese ceramics, jade ware, bronze, calligraphy and painting , stone inscription rubbing, and Thangka. Most of them are from the Palace Museum. The rare cultural relic like Mao Gong Ding and the San Shi Plate Rubbing are the original high-quality rubbing. Amitayus Sutra and Fomu are the rare treasures. Chinese imperial porcelains are dedicate and gorgeous reflecting the unique imperial quality. In 2005, the Museum of Shanghai Normal University was named the National Porcelain Art Museum of the first ten Shanghai Colleges Cultural Museums by Science and Education Party Committee of municipal. In 2012, it became the first member of the alliance of National Colleges Education Museums. Covering an area of 740 square meter, the Museum of Shanghai Normal University exhibition area includes two exhibition halls: ceramics and calligraphy which cover about 600 square meters. There are two basic exhibitions, one is Ancient Chinese Ceramic Art Exhibition and another is Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting.

Since the new museum has been unveiled on May 18th, 2002, it has successively held a series of the special exhibitions with a reasonable size and influence, such as the Cultural Exhibition of Yin Ruins of the An Yang City, the Painted-Pottery Culture Exhibition of Qinghai Willow Bay Pottery Museum, and “Xuan Furnace Ji Jin” (the artifacts of the sacrificial vessels engraved with inscriptions in honor of worthy men)-Suzhou Museum Ming Xuande Furnace Exhibition. What’s more, it also held many academic activities like “ International Academic Seminar of Blue and White Porcelain of Yuan Dynasty”, “the Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Museum of Shanghai Normal University  and the Civilization between University Museums and City Civilization: Opportunity, Challenge and Enlightenment Seminar”, etc. The Museum of Shanghai Normal University not only offers service to both teachers and students of the university, but also takes an active part in cooperating with the communities and the schools around it. In this way, the museum enhances and shows the public service and education by advocating and educational activities of inviting the arts to the campus and communities. Based on the activity of “Going to Shanghai Normal University-Xuhui District Teenagers University Cultural Experiencing and Shanghai Normal University Humanity and Science Popularization Open Day”, in 2009, the museum began to join hands with Xuhui District Education Bureau and Shanghai primary and secondary schools to build a social practice long-term mechanism for the primary and secondary school students, expand the new space of the quality-oriented education of the juveniles and build the high-level and high-taste university cultural elementary education and service community. In recent years, by integrating school sources, working with the national outstanding student association, taking advantage of the activities on International Museum Day(the 18th May) and Chinese Cultural Relics Day as well as being in accordance with the second reform of primary and middle school students in Shanghai, the museum plans to carry out the second-class social practice activities with seal cutting and ceramic art experience as the core content, which is a hit on campus and off and win good social benefits.

The museum has ever won the “Excellent Organization Prize” in “Ethnic Cultural Museum Joint Exhibition in 2007 and 2013” of the colleges in Shanghai, the “Excellent Organization Prize” in “International Museum Day and Chinese Cultural Heritage Day” in Xuhui area, the “Excellent Achievement Prize” in “Ministry of Education Construction of Campus Culture of National Colleges”, the first prize in “Excellent Education Program of National Colleges Museums Alliance” and other prizes. The technical specialists in museum have received advanced individuals of museum work in Xuhui area, Shanghai for 5 years in a row.
